Winter Highway Survival Guide

Saskatchewan winters don’t play nice. Be ready before you’re stranded between Swift Current and Moose Jaw.

Pack These in Your Trunk

  • Blanket or sleeping bag – body heat drops fast.

  • Extra warm layers – hat, gloves, boots.

  • High-energy snacks – granola bars, nuts, chocolate.

  • Water – 1 bottle per person (freeze-proof container).

  • Portable charger + phone cable.

  • Small shovel, cat litter, or traction mats.

  • Flashlight + extra batteries.

  • First-aid kit & any meds.

  • Seatbelt cutter / glass breaker combo tool – keep it within arm’s reach (console or visor). Cuts jammed belts in seconds; shatters tempered glass for escape if doors freeze or jam.

Tire Check = Life Check

  • Tread depth ≥ 6/32" for winter grip.

  • Pressure drops ~1 PSI per 10°C colder – check weekly.

  • Age matters – tires over 6 years old = higher blowout risk, even if tread looks okay.

Pro tip: If you’re stuck in a storm, stay with your vehicle. It’s your shelter. Run the engine 10 min every hour (clear exhaust pipe first) and crack a window for fresh air.
